TRP Launches 2014 National Reuse Contest

The ReUse People SpecialsBy Ted Reiff
This year we’re not waiting for Spring to arrive before rolling out our annual Reuse Contest. Entries and feedback from previous years have made it abundantly clear that people need all the time they can get to plan and execute some of the amazing projects entered in the competition.

When we first introduced the Reuse Contest several years ago, our purpose was to promote the reuse of building materials and to give our customers an additional incentive to incorporate salvaged materials wherever possible when building, remodeling or creating signature products such as furniture and works of art. After starting in the San Francisco Bay Area, we quickly expanded to include the rest of California, and in 2012 went national.

Any store in the country that sells used building materials may now participate. Clearly, if we are going to raise public awareness of the many benefits of buying used in place of new materials – our primary goal – the more stores the better. No amount of advertising will ever be as effective as our contestants at demonstrating the fun, challenges and rewards of remodeling a kitchen, building a greenhouse, or creating a custom table from mostly used materials.

Choose Your Category

This year we are asking participants to choose one of two categories for each entry: Construction & Remodeling or Art & Furniture. This will assure greater fairness in judging. Comparing a piece of custom furniture or wall art with a tree house or bathroom renovation has never been easy, and we hope to eliminate this difficulty by having two separate categories.

National first, second and third-place winners in both categories will receive the same level of prizes – gift certificates worth $1,000, $500 and $250 respectively, redeemable at their sponsoring stores (with the cost covered by TRP).

The first-place winner in each category will also receive a framed 8.5 x 11 color print of their entry and a visit from TRP President Ted Reiff. Managers of the sponsoring stores will be asked to participate in these visits.

Nine Months Remaining

If you have a project in the works that will be completed this year, don’t miss this opportunity. All entries must be received at participating stores by October 31, 2014.

After conducting their own contests, participating stores will submit their top three winners in each category to TRP, whose panel of independent judges will select the national winners.

If you can’t find a participating store near you, forward (or print and deliver) this e-letter to the manager of the nearest retail store that sells used building materials and let’s get that store involved.

If you are a store manager and would like to participate, please contact TRP. The sooner your store signs up, the more time TRP will have to help you promote the contest to your customer base. TRP will provide all the necessary tools.
