San Bernardino Warehouse to Open in August

The ReUse PeopleBy Ted Reiff

In the spring of 2013, TRP signed an agreement with the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino (HACSB) to conduct training programs in both deconstruction and retailing, and to open and manage a used building-materials retail store in the county.

All of the training programs were completed several months ago. The much anticipated retail operation will be ready to open later this month.

The store occupies a 10,000 square-foot HACSB building at 660 East Orange Street, San Bernardino. The easy-access location is on the northwest corner of Baseline and East Orange just a few miles off the 10, 215 and 210 freeways. An adjacent 5,000 square-foot yard will house lumber. The ReUse People

The store will be open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., beginning no later than August 26. For more information or detailed directions, phone 909-388-6475 or visit www.ReUseSanBernardino.org.

San Bernardino homeowners, contractors and others will be able to purchase high-quality used building materials for cents on the dollar. Appliances, bricks and pavers, cabinets, doors, windows, lighting, lumber, plumbing and electrical fixtures will be standard inventory.

Store Manager Kelly Simione, a graduate of the TRP deconstruction and retail training programs, is busy preparing the store for launch, assisted by Ruben Iuhas and Khamisi Howard, both deconstruction graduates.

The crew has acquired the necessary pallet racking, tools, signage, and POS and computer systems for the successful launch. Departments have been established for various inventory groupings, along with procedures for merchandise receiving, back-office operations and safety. Lumber and plywood racks have been installed and stocked, and the parking lot is ready.

With the exception of two loads of materials from the TRP Los Angeles warehouse, all inventoried materials were salvaged from the deconstruction of several residential units at an HACSB project in Redlands. The store will also stock dozens of brand new doors and hundreds of small plumbing, electrical and hardware items at dramatically reduced prices.

To help keep the store well stocked, we are inviting remodeling contractors, custom home builders and demolition contractors in San Bernardino, Riverside and east L.A. Counties to drop off good used materials (thereby saving landfill fees) and to consider becoming TRP-certified deconstruction contractors. Certified deconstruction contractors are able to provide their customers with receipts for tax-deductible donations of salvaged materials earmarked for the warehouse.

TRP is grateful to HACSB for the opportunity to bring the benefits of salvaged materials to the citizens of San Bernardino. Please stop by and see us!
