Reuse Professional from Finland Visits TRP

The ReUse People

By Ted Reiff

In mid August TRP enjoyed a rare visit from one of its European counterparts. Visiting from Finland was Kati Hinkkanen, Development Manager with Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre, a nonprofit social enterprise organization whose mission is “to improve the state of the environment by reducing the amount of waste and by offering an alternative to single-use culture.”

Reuse Centre operates four retail stores that also serve as receiving locations, two in Helsinki and one each in Espoo and Vantaa. In addition to retail operations, Reuse Centre:

  1. Provides environmental education to unemployed jobseekers, including on-the-job training, preparatory training for working life and vocational rehabilitation.
  2. Repairs electrical and electronic home products.
  3. Develops environmental curricula for schools and offers environmental training workshops and consulting.
  4. Creates unique consumer products from used materials, especially clothing, costume jewelry and furniture.

Reuse Centre accepts and sells a wide spectrum of consumer goods, including appliances, clothing, books, art, furniture and sporting goods. However, building materials represents only a small fraction of the company’s sales. Motivated to improve the building-materials segment of the organization, Kati spent two days at TRP Oakland, where she toured deconstruction jobsites and visited with several program managers and one certified deconstruction contractor.

Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre will participate in the 2015 TRP National Reuse Contest, effectively making next year’s competition international—even before it starts. The last time we went international was in 2008, the first year of the contest, when the Brussels company Rotor entered and won an honorable mention.

The 2014 National Reuse Contest will close in two months. Be sure to submit your art, furniture or construction project to a local participating store before the October 31 deadline. If you have any questions, please direct them to Contest Coordinator Kachine Blackwell –
